Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’
This hybrid sweetshrub also known as ‘Carolina allspice’ is a striking, long-flowering plant that always garners plenty of interest at our RHS Chelsea exhibit.
Spring to autumn interest
Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ is a deciduous shrub that can grow to nearly three metres in height, and bears large, lightly scented wine-red flowers and attractive mid-green, cinnamon-scented oval leaves.
The burgundy flowers can grow up to 12 centimetres in diameter and have a touch of cream in the centre. They bloom from late spring to early autumn and then the leaves turn butter-yellow in autumn before falling off in winter.
Growing tips
‘Hartlage Wine’ is a hardy plant that can tolerate harsh winters and all types of soil, making it easy to grow and care for in all types of gardens.
It is suited to planting in borders in rich, well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. It prefers a position in full sun or dappled shade, as long as the area is reasonably sheltered from cold winds – next to a fence or wall would be ideal.
Although ‘Hartlage Wine’ can reach an eventual height of almost three metres, and the same for its spread, light pruning in either early spring or late autumn will help to keep the shrub compact and manageable for smaller spaces.”
